reuse holiday decor.

today we will

reuse holiday decor.
WHY  We discard about 25% more trash between Thanksgiving & New Year's in the US than the rest of the year. We will reduce waste by reusing holiday decor.

HOW  Let's decorate with decor we already own. Don't have any? Avoid plastics. Opt for locally-made reusables like glass, metal, ceramics or responsibly-sourced wood.
ON THIS TIP

From subscribers Janet V:

"Because housekeepers, usually women of color, make poverty wages and rely on tips, please encourage people to double-tip on days they refuse service. A couple of dollars makes a  huge difference for them and they're often paid per room they clean. We're all part of many interdependent webs."

From Subscriber Ann-Marie N:
"You can also request housekeeping to not come during your stay! Through Marriott hotel chains, you can also enroll in "green choice" through the app. This will automatically lengthen the time between cleanings and gives you bonus points!"

Thanks, Janet and Ann-Marie!

consider refurbished tech. ðŸ“±ðŸ’»ðŸ“·

today we will

consider refurbished tech.
WHY  The resources and energy required to make and ship new hardwire take a big toll on the planet. We will reduce our impact by opting for refurbished tech.

HOW  The next time we need* to get a new phone, laptop, or similar hardware, let's get it refurbished/used instead of new. Here is a good place for safely doing so.

*Let's make sure really need it first. Not getting anything new is always best.
GREAT IDEAS
From subscribers Holly K.:

"Here's another idea: Use the blank backs of envelopes to write shopping lists and put coupons in the envelope."

From Subscriber Karen S:
"Cut up bar soap into several slices. Add 1-2 slices plus water into a reusable liquid soap dispenser and voila...after a short time, liquid soap! I store the extra slices in a reusable container. You can also make a back up bottle of soap that is ready to use when needed (as some soap needs more time than others to fully dissolve in the water). Enjoy!"

Thanks for sharing, Holly and Karen!

know about soap nuts.

today we will

know about soap nuts.
WHY  Soap nuts are a naturally-occurring, backyard-compostable alternative to soap-based products, like detergents. We will reduce waste by considering soap nuts.

HOW  We can learn more about soap nuts here. If we want to give them a try, let's try searching for them on Etsy, and filtering for shops in nearby locations.
*Here's a good option if we can't find any others. Their packaging is plastic-free.
From subscribers Adrian K. and Martha W. on this tip:

Adrian: "This is stupid. If my electricity is from 100% renewables you are basically asking me to burn hydrocarbons instead.

TWW Response: Thanks for your feedback! Majority of our readers don't get their power from renewables, but will be sure to address those that do in the future

Martha: Burning candles release pollution into the air which one would wish to avoid. Really.

TWW Response: I was inspired by this article, which shares that, one to one, lighting a candle is better than a bulb. This assumes a few things, like a regular bulb is being used. I suppose I should have mentioned that using a paraffin-free candle, soy or beeswax candle would be best. I'll share that add-on in an upcoming email.

Thanks for the feedback Adrian and Martha!

put it on hold and think about it.

today we will

put it on hold and think about it.
WHY  With so many sales going on this time of year, it can be easy to impulse buy things we don't need. We will reduce excess waste by putting it on hold first.

HOW  When we're about to buy something we didn't originally set out to purchase, let's put it on hold or leave it in our carts for a day. If we still want it, then let's get it.
From subscriber Alexandra I. on this tip: "Hi, this is a great message - the only thing that I would add to it is to put your own snacks in a reusable container - for lunch at work or travel."

Thanks, Alexandra!
