choose cake over cupcakes. 🎂🍰

today we will

choose cake over cupcakes.
WHY  Paper cupcake cups create more waste and add to methane emissions in landfills. We will reduce methane emissions by choosing cake over cupcakes.

HOW  When we are getting celebratory desserts, choose cake (or doughnuts, or cookies, or anything not individually wrapped) over cupcakes.

opt for candy in foil or cardboard.

today we will

opt for candy in foil or cardboard.
WHY  Foil & cardboard are recyclable. Soft plastics wrappers are usually not. We will reduce plastic waste by opting for candy in foil or cardboard (this Halloween.)

HOW  When we buy candy for Halloween or to satiate a sweet tooth, we can choose those wrapped in foil or in cardboard packaging. Here's a good list of examples.

consider a reusable cup sleeve.

today we will

consider a reusable cup sleeve.
WHY  Creating, recycling, & discarding paper cup sleeves = ghg emissions. We will reduce ghg emissions by using one reusable cup sleeve instead of many paper ones.

HOW  We can consider reusable sleeves like these. Or, reuse disposable sleeves. Keep either in our bag and use it when needed. Reusable sleeve and cup is always best.

choose hard over soft plastic.

today we will

choose hard over soft plastic.
WHY Softer plastics are not accepted at many recycling plants. Instead, most get discarded. We will reduce plastic waste by choosing hard over soft plastic.

HOW When faced with a choice in products, and all choices come in plastic, we can choose the harder plastic. No plastic is always best, though.

Subscriber Gwenyth J. added, "..put soap on a cleaning rag...[it] can then be used to wash many dishes" to yesterday's tip.
Thanks Gwenyth!

pool & dab dish soap.

today we will

pour & dab dish soap.
WHY Using excess soap means buying new packaging more often. And, more soap in waterways. We will reduce consumption & water pollution if we pour & dab dish soap.

HOW Instead of pouring dish soap onto each dirty dish, we can pour some on the counter alongside the sink. Then, dab our sponges in that for soap when we need it.
