choose food with fewer ingredients.

today we will

choose food with fewer ingredients.
WHY The more ingredients, the more items that had to be made and/or shipped. We will reduce production & transport emissions by choosing food with fewer ingredients.

HOW When shopping for food, read the packaging and opt for those with fewer ingredients listed. When dining, opt for dishes with fewer ingredients.

ask for no takeout bag at lunch.

today we will

ask for no takeout bag at lunch.
WHY On average, we use plastic bags for just 12 minutes. Lunch takeout is probably less. We'll reduce unnecessary single-use plastic by asking for no bag at lunch.

HOW When getting takeout for lunch, ask for no bag. Carry the lunch container instead of the bag.
From Subscriber Gina on This Tip:
I'm so curious about recycling aluminum. Does this include tin foil? What if it's soiled with food particles? Also, do you know of alternatives to foil? For example I bake muffins (should I use paper instead) and I use foil as a sheet when cooking dinner as a liner on the baking sheet.

I prefer not to use foil actually, but my husband stock piled some (including saran wrap unfortunately) so I'm using it until we find better alternatives, especially with the tin foil. I use Tupperware instead of saran wrap usually.

TWW Answer:
Yes, tinfoil is recyclable! Rinse as best you can to get any food or oils off.
As an alternative to foil to line a baking sheet, I use a reusable silicone sheet pan liners that I got from Crate and Barrel, but I'm sure if you look that up online, you could find them at a few places. For keeping food, I use a reusable beeswax wrap.

Hope that's helpful!

bring drinks on airplanes.

today we will

bring drinks on airplanes.
WHY Drinks on airplanes are poured into plastic cups, doubling our container use. We will reduce container waste by bringing drinks on airplanes.

HOW Pack a reusable bottle and fill it up at the airport at a water or soda fountain. Or, ask your flight attendant to fill your bottle instead of the airline's plastic cup.

choose pens without clips.

today we will

choose pens without clips.
WHY Pen clips easily break off during use* or disposal, creating bits of plastic.  This gets in our food chain. We will reduce plastic waste by opting for pens, sans clips.
*Especially with fidgeting.

HOW Next time we guy or get to choose a pen at work, choose one without a clip. If you need the clip, go for metal ones over plastic.
From Subscriber Sue on This Tip:
Could you give us name brand suggestions for the sunscreen?

TWW Answer:
I like Raw Elements because my local natural store carries it in a tin package and it goes nicely onto my skin. But, everyone has different preferences and budgets!

I would check your local health food or natural stores and see what's available locally. Most sunscreens that are biodegradable say so on the packaging, so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

I believe even Target carries some sunscreen brands that are biodegradable, like Alba Botanical.

And, Etsy let's you shop by state, so you can look up biodegradable or reef safe sunscreen on there that are near you too.

Hope that's helpful!

soak stubborn dishes before scrubbing.

today we will

soak stubborn dishes before scrubbing.
WHY Washing dishes with stuck-on food means extra running water. Soaked food comes off more easily. We will reduce water use by soaking those dishes first.

HOW When a dish has some food that's not coming off right away, put a dash of soap and thin layer of warm water* in it for 20+ minutes. Then scrub.
*Just enough to cover the stubborn food, no need to fill up the whole pot or pan.
From Subscriber Adrian on This Tip:
I really don't understand this one. Can you please explain? What's emitting the CO2 [when using a treadmill]?

TWW Answer:
The emissions from using a treadmill comes from the energy needed to run the treadmill. Most electricity is created by burning fossil fuels at power hubs. The more power we use, the more fossil fuels are needed to keep up with the energy demanded.

Hope that clears things up!
